Bréf frá New Orleans
Vinur minn er staddur í New Orleans að hjálpa fjölskyldu sinni við endurbyggingu.
Hann senti þetta bréf í gær og ég bað hann strax um leyfi til að birta það hérna því þetta situr svo í mér. Mig dreymdi í nótt myglubletti sem uxu uppeftir húsveggjunum hjá mér á meðan ég hamaðist við að teipa ísskápa útá götu.
HOLY SHIT, this is alot worse than i ever imagined.
Everyone living in this area have been dramatically affected by the storm.
Some people, lots of people, have lost everything.
Lots of structures within the city endured slow rising flood waters up to 8-9ft. and sat in the stagnant mess for up to 2 weeks.
The biggest problem with this is the heinous mold that crawls up the walls like fingers and covers everything. These buldings sat like this, closed and borded up for almost 6 weeks before people were even allowed to check their property, and most still do.
The first thing people have to do is remove their refrigerator which has been without power. There are thousands of these things on the street, taped shut, to keep the foul goo and odor within. Driving around at night is extremely disturbing since it makes it more apparent that there are hundreds of miles of streets that are utterly abandoned with no power, lights or life. Driving here is quite dangerous with lots of debris still everywhere.
I know that I will not leave this city without a flat tire.
In some ways people living outside the levee benefitted from not having to sit in the flood waters for weeks. They were however, subjected to the beating of a 16 ft. storm surge for 6-7 hours. Taking the full force of the storm, and sitting unprotected in the middle of the ocean and getting pounded by the unbelievable amount of debris.
We are workin outside the levee. Here the air smells acrid and tastes like sucking on a 9 volt battery. At the end of the day, my throat feels sore and scratchy and a dull headache persists. Everything out here is covered with a very fine silt, two feet thick in some places.
It becomes airborn very easily and coats my nostrils.
Fortunately, wine seems to be the cure for this trip.
